Susie Gray - Position: Vice President
Originally from Illinois, Susie Gray has always considered the rink her second home. Her kids pretty much grew up at the rink, and were skating shortly after they could walk, playing hockey and figure skating. Susie was an active member of the Heart of Illinois figure skating club for many years in Peoria, Illinois. Her daughter Brooke has skated competitively off and on through many moves in Peoria and Bloomington Illinois, Greensboro, North Carolina, and most recently Pelham, Alabama where she skates for the Birmingham Figure Skating Club and Magic City Theatre on Ice and is the vice-president of the BFSC Junior Board. Brooke is currently a freshman at Liberty University where she hopes to continue skating with their college figure skating team. Brooke is also a competitor in fine arts with singing, writing, comedy, and theatre and has won multiple state titles and performed at the national level as a soloist and in groups. Brooke also does gymnastics and tumbling. Susie is the fine arts coordinator for her church and one of the representatives at the General Council for many years at the Annual Meeting. Her son Austin has skated out of the Heart of Illinois skating club and Summit Figure Skating Club as a solo and pairs skater, but concentrated most of his time on the ice as a hockey player. He is also a musician and runner. Susie has served on the board for Bloomington Youth Hockey and the Peoria Mustangs Junior Hockey team, where she was instrumental in developing a synchronized skating team that performed at junior hockey games to raise funds for breast cancer research. She coordinates the club newsletter and does social media and graphic design work for the club. She has implemented programs with the junior board such as the Featured Skater program, along with multiple philanthropic projects with community organizations such as Be a Blessing Birmingham, Oak Mountain Ministries, and Cops We Care. She works with Magic City Theatre on Ice to create daily videos, graphics, and posts to encourage not only Birmingham Figure Skating Club skaters but skaters within the entire skating community to continue training and mental health and wellness during the pandemic, as USFSA has called all boards to do in their communications, with the USFSA theme of “We might be off the ice, but we can use this time to be stronger upon our return. We Get Up! Skaters have the grit, passion and perseverance needed to Get Up in the rink and in life every day.” When she’s not at the rink or with her family, Susie is an active member of her church, is an artist (preferring painting and graphic design), and is a substitute teacher, teaches private art, art history, and piano lessons.
Loredana Cretu - Position: Treasurer
I am originally from Romania. I finished my college degree in Economics at the University of Transylvania in Brasov, Romania. I came to the US in 2001 and continued my studies with an MBA in Finance at UAB, Birmingham, Alabama. I currently work at Encompass Health Corporation as a Tax Supervisor in the Tax Department.
I have two kids: Adria (10 years old) and Lucas (9 years old), both students at Rocky Ridge Elementary School. Adria has been skating occasionally since she was 3 years old and started taking private classes at 5 years old. My daughter loves figure skating both individually and in group. She has been part of the Birmingham Theater on Ice for the last four years. She loves skating as well as academics. She won two years in a row the “Spelling Bee” for her school and competed one year at the District level. She is involved in school activities such as: Honor Society, Enrichment Program, Drama Club, Math Club, Talent shows and Morning Broadcasts.
Because of my daughter’s love for figure skating, I started to join the Birmingham Figure Skating Board a year ago and served in various voluntary activities throughout the year. I love the energy and commitment to this club of all current regular and executive board members and I would consider being part of the treasury duties in order to help the club be in good standing and adhere to the current rules and regulations. If elected in this vital position of the club, I understand that I need to be a good custodian of the BFSC’s money, but most importantly provide/be transparent with the financial information to support decision making and work as part of the club’s group team and within the limitations of the group’s budget.
Amy Gruszczynski - Position: Secretary
My daughter Maria Gruszczynski has skated for 7 years. Before moving to Birmingham she skated in Pensacola, FL. I volunteered as the President of Greater Pensacola Figure Skating Club for 2 years and the Treasurer for 3 years. I am employed at Technology Transfer LLC as Director of Finance. I would enjoy continuing to serve on the BFSC Board to give back to the skating community that gives so much of their time to provide an active and supportive environment for our skaters!!
Priscilla Fowler - Position: Test Chair
Priscilla has had a life long love and passion for the sport of figure skating that began at the tender age of four and a half when her Canadian born mother first introduced her to the sport. It was not long after that she joined the Birmingham Figure Skating Club, making her the most longstanding member still active in the Club today. She was one of the few skaters to skate competitively at that time and traveled to local and regional competitions, even making the trip to Michigan at age ten to compete in the Eastern Great Lakes Regionals Competition. It was around that time that the coaching staff dwindled in Birmingham, requiring Priscilla to seek her training elsewhere and she spent summers away in both Canton, New York and Lake Placid for two summers until finally landing on a coach in Atlanta where she trained under Dale Wright who indirectly produced Tim Dolensky through her long time student, Debbie Walls Prachar. Before leaving for college, Priscilla became the first BFSC member to earn the title of USFSA Gold medalist by passing her 8th Gold Figure Test. She went on to coach skating during summers in college and then was a full time coach for two years after college before she entered medical school and residency to become a board certified Ophthalmologist. After being away from skating for nearly ten years during her medical training, she returned and earned her USFSA Gold Medal in Ice Dancing. She now participates in skating with her “skate Dad” husband, Keir, by supporting their 11 year old daughter, Harper, who is competing at the Pre-Juvenile level and working on her double jumps. Priscilla also enjoys teaching Learn to Skate classes and assisting with the Theater on Ice team. This year, Priscilla also returned to skating herself as a member of the Adult Theater on Ice Team. Priscilla has served as Test Chair and Magic City Ice Classic Competition Chair for the last year and a half and was responsible for obtaining membership for our Club in the National Qualifying Series. As a former skater with extensive knowledge of the history of the BFSC and figure skating in Birmingham, Priscilla feels that our program is poised for great future success. She is excited to continue to bring her knowledge and love of figure skating to the board to help promote that mission.
